Hardwood railing rebuilt to Ontario Building Code

Handrail, newels and balusters rebuilt in hardwood to Ontario Building Code thresholds for height, graspability and guard opening.

When this is the job

A rail that moves when you lean on it, a flat decorative cap that cannot be gripped, or a renovation that has to satisfy a municipal inspector. Often discovered during a sale or an insurance review.

Also called: hardwood railing Ontario building code · graspable handrail · stair railing replacement Toronto · wobbly banister repair

Published band

From $180–$420 / linear foot

HST extra. A range, not a quote — a firm number follows a moisture reading on site.

Worked example

$5,907$8,380

24 linear feet of rail, oak, Toronto · 2–4 days

Typical specification

  • Handrail height and guard height set to the Ontario Building Code thresholds published on this site
  • A graspable profile — a flat cap is not a handrail regardless of how it looks
  • Newel posts anchored to structure, not to finished tread material
  • Baluster spacing to the guard-opening limit

Sequence of work

  1. 1Measure the existing flight against the code thresholds and write down every number.
  2. 2Locate structure for the newel anchors; add blocking where there is none.
  3. 3Set newels first, plumb and anchored, before any rail is cut.
  4. 4Cut and fit the rail to the graspable profile, continuous over the flight.
  5. 5Fit balusters to the opening limit and finish to match the treads.

What goes wrong

The part of a hardwood job that costs money is rarely the part in the quote. These are the failures that produce a second invoice.

Newels anchored into tread material instead of structure

The rail is solid on the day and loose within a year. This is the single most common reason a railing wobbles.

Avoided by: Finding or adding real structure and anchoring to it, before anything else is built.

A flat decorative cap specified as the handrail

Not graspable, therefore not a compliant handrail, however expensive the timber. It fails inspection on permitted work and it fails the person who slips.

Avoided by: A profile that a hand can close around, checked against the code thresholds.

Baluster spacing set by eye

Guard openings exceed the limit, which is the rule written specifically to protect small children.

Avoided by: Setting spacing from the published limit and measuring the widest gap, not the average.
