Is wide-plank white oak a good idea in a Toronto house?
Yes, specified correctly — wide plank is the most-requested look in the GTA right now, and white oak takes stain and wear better than red. The catch is movement: the wider the board, the more a dry February and a humid July show. Past about five inches we spec engineered construction or quarter-sawn stock, check the subfloor moisture, and insist on humidity control. The plank does not fail; the specification does.
